The Wine
The Ritchie Vineyard in the Russian River Valley appellation is characterized by widely spaced, old vines dating back to the early 1970s. These gnarled trunks produce small clusters with noticeable size variations among the berries. The soil on the plateau consists of gravelly, sandy Goldridge Loam, originating from the bed of an ancient inland sea and overlaying volcanic tuff rock. The vines are primarily Old Wente selection, supplemented by occasional Musque selection vines. The block in Kent Ritchie's vineyard was planted in 1972.
The Winery
Ramey Wine Cellars, founded by David and Carla Ramey in 1996, has significantly influenced California winemaking in the 21st century and set a new standard. Combining time-honored techniques with high-quality grapes from Sonoma and Napa, the winery has become one of California's iconic estates. The Ramey family maintains long-standing collaborations with multiple generations of grape growers to produce single-vineyard wines and blends that showcase the distinctive characteristics of their vineyards. The second generation, Claire and Alan Ramey, assumed co-presidency of the winery in 2021. Their vision remains constant: to create classic wines from Sonoma and Napa that rank among the world's finest.
