Der Wein
The Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2011 from Marqués de Murrieta Winery is an outstanding example of the fine art of winemaking in Rioja Alta. This exquisitely aged wine comes from La Plana, a 40-hectare vineyard at an altitude of 485 meters, established in 1950. The careful hand harvesting and separate fermentation of Tempranillo and Mazuelo grapes in stainless steel tanks, followed by 28 months of aging in American and French oak barrels, bestow this wine with extraordinary complexity and elegance. The bouquet unfolds intense aromas of ripe cherries, blueberries, and cassis, complemented by delicate nuances of garrigue, Mediterranean herbs, black pepper, cloves, and a hint of mocha. On the palate, the wine is vibrant yet harmoniously integrated with silky tannins and a long, elegant finish. A truly memorable vintage that once again highlights the exceptional potential of the La Plana vineyard.
Das Weingut
The Marqués de Murrieta Winery, founded by Don Luciano Murrieta who created the first Rioja wine in 1852 using techniques learned in Bordeaux, is not only the origin of the Bodega but also a landmark in the history of Rioja. With his vision of producing high-quality, long-lasting Rioja wines and exporting them internationally, Don Luciano laid the foundation for a tradition that continues to this day. The winery combines noble materials and the latest technologies in its historic Castillo de Ygay, which was declared a museum in 2019, to blend tradition and innovation in perfect harmony.
